  17. <p>    Throughout the trial of former National Security Council
  18. aide Oliver North, the jury was the focus as often as the
  19. defendant. The jurors, all working-class blacks, became the
  20. butt of jokes because of their acknowledged ignorance about the
  21. Iran-contra affair. Last week one jury member was back in the
  22. news, seven weeks after voting to convict North of obstructing
  23. Congress, unlawfully destroying Government documents and
  24. accepting an illegal gift. A defense allegation of misconduct by
  25. a juror persuaded U.S. District Court Judge Gerhard Gesell to
  26. postpone North's sentencing until July 5.

  28. <p>    Juror Tara Leigh King, 34, a photocopier operator, admitted
  29. having used marijuana and crack but said she stopped four months
  30. before the trial began. The defense argues that the possibility
  31. that she might have been under the influence of narcotics during
  32. the trial called into question the fairness of the proceedings.
  33. North's lawyers also claimed that King failed to disclose during
  34. jury selection that members of her family had arrest records,
  35. including an armed-robbery conviction of a brother. Gesell will
  36. hold a hearing this week, but the defense tactics are likely to
  37. win North only a short respite before he receives his sentence.
